$143m Spent on Renewing Roads, Bridges and Jetties
Fiji Roads Authority spent $275 million in the 2017/2018 financial year to carry out new capital works project.
Presenting FRA’s 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 annual reports in Parliament the Standing Committee on Social Affairs Chairperson Viam Pillay said they deliberated on the report in April this year and endorsed it in May.
Some of the pertinent findings included FRA’s restructure in 2017/2018 which introduced processes and procedures to enable it to make decisions based on sound governance.
During that same year FRA carried out maintenance work amounting to $121 million on roads and structures, and a further $38 million on emergency services.
Mr Pillay said the new capital works project focused on the delivery of new assets in support of public safety and accessibility with a major push on providing safe pedestrian access and
streetlights.
FRA’s first solar streetlights and network were also completed in the same year.
Major expenditure of $38 million was also recorded in the new capital access sector which consists of rural roads around the country.
As part of improving access throughout Fiji, FRA spent $143 million on renewing roads, bridges and jetties.
Major investments in road safety for communities including new footpaths, improving access for people with disabilities, construction of new bus shelters and waiting facilities at the jetties totalled $18 million.
