‘We are trying to save our village’

Another area in Cakaudrove Province affected by climate change is Viani Village.

Village headman Sekonaia Biumaiwai said sea level rise became an issue after Tropical Cyclone Yasa on December 17, 2020.
“During high tide, sea water enters the village green and under some homes,” he said.
“There are 51 houses in the village and five houses located near the shore.
“We are trying everything possible to save our village.”
Meanwhile, the village youths underwent a two-day training conducted by the Fiji Police Force and the Ministry of Fisheries and conservation officer from the Cakaudrove Provincial Office.
“The training has empowered youths and given hope for villagers to live at least a few more years without fear of losing our homes,” Mr Biumaiwai said.
