Ba Methodist High School head boy Veretaki Tuilekutu believes leadership is not just a tag that hangs on a school badge.

The Year 13 tech-science student was inducted this week, to lead a 62-member student council.

Leadership roles are not new in the family because his mum was badged as deputy head girl of Laucala Bay Secondary School in 1996.

“I am challenged and honoured. Challenged in terms of the new responsibilities and new duties that I have to perform not only as a student but as a leader in the school,” he said

“Honoured in terms of being able to have that authority and be badged because you can reach Year 13 and only dream about having to be badged as a head boy.”

He was also the head boy at Nadi Arya Samaj Primary School in 2017.

“Honestly my focus was on studies, I haven’t done anything throughout my years in high school. I have not been given or did any duties as a prefect and I’ve always kept it to myself and just tried to pass all my exams,” he said.

The 18-year-old is the eldest of five siblings and wants a career in Information Technology.

Head girl Kalolaini Niubalavu, 17, is the eldest of 10 siblings and is following the example of her father who is an engineer by profession and was once the head boy at Vatukoula Convent School.

The Mabula, Cicia, Lau native is a Year 13 agriculture science student who plans to follow a career pathway in meteorology as she is in love with nature and geography.

“I am surprised and happy at the same time since I want to make a change and it benefited me academically,” she said.

The boarding school has a roll is 333 which includes several dayscholars too.
