Seasonal work helps farmer raise family’s living standard
Matevata Waca of Navuatu Village, Sanima in Kadavu was able to improve the living standards of his family after he returned from New Zealand.
He was among Fijians who worked under the New Zealand Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) Work Scheme.
He worked in New Zealand in 2019 for six months, travelled back to Fiji and returned in 2020 to work for another six months saving more than $15,000.
The father of four children is a yaqona farmer in his village.
“Before I left for New Zealand my wife and I sat down to plan what needed to be done for our family. We planned to extend our house and we did exactly that,” Mr Waca said.
“When in New Zealand I sent money to my wife to put in the bank. We were able to save such a big amount of money.
“We extended our house in 2019 and in 2020 we purchased a solar system for our house.
We used $3000 for the extension of the house and $8500 for the solar system.
“Since my wife and children lived in the village while I was away, they only used $100 a month since we had a farm where they get crops and vegetables from.
“I hope to re-apply and go next year. I want to thank the Government for introducing such schemes that improve the lives of Fijians.
“When the Government is giving us chances like this, we should make use of it and be wise when using money.”
His wife Mereoni Sau was thankful to have a wise husband who made the most of his time overseas so he could send home money for their family.
“In 2017, we opened a small shop in the village and we wanted to get solar so that we can sell frozen goods. Business has been good for us so far,” Ms Sau said.
“My husband went to New Zealand for a purpose and we were able to fulfill them all.”
