Teacher who allegedly assaulted student in Labasa allowed on bail

Aprimary school teacher who allegedly assaulted a 12-year-old student was given bail on a bail bond of $500 by the Magistrate­s Court in Labasa on Friday.

Sushil Kumar, a teacher of Sangam Primary School in Labasa appeared before Magistrate Senileba Levaci.

He is charged with one count of assault. It is alleged that on May 3, the teacher unlawfully assaulted the Year Seven student in class.

Police Prosecutor Constable Vishal Varma had no objections to bail.

The accused’s lawyer, Alvin Prakash of Alvin Prakash Lawyers said his client was not a threat to the community and cooperated with the Police.

Two sureties who were relatives of the accused appeared.

She advised the accused not to have any contact with the student in school premises.

Mr Prakash said the accused was willing to stay away from school, but Magistrate Levaci addressed the need to rearrange classes as he was the victim’s subject teacher.

The case had been adjourned for mention on July 8.Edited
