Ali Graduates With a Master of Law From Top NZ University
Nicholas Ali wanted to make his family in Fiji proud and he did exactly that. The former Yat Sen Secondary School student graduated with a Master of Law (LLM) with Merit from the University of Auckland last week.
Before pursuing further studies in Auckland, Mr Ali pursued his undergraduate law degree (LLB) from the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand.
He is currently an Auckland based solicitor at one of New Zealand’s leading corporate and commercial law firms Russell McVeagh.
“One of the challenges was being away from home and my family for so long, and readjusting to life in a new country. The way I overcame this challenge was constantly reminding myself of all those who made sacrifices for me to be where I was, which also motivated me to perform to the best of my abilities.
“I really wanted to make those at home feel a sense of pride, and make sure that all their hard work and support was worth it.
“During my studies, I interned during my university breaks at Howards Lawyers under the guidance and supervision of Principal Wylie Clark, and briefly at the Attorney-General’s Chambers under former Deputy SolicitorGeneral Tracey Wong.
“These opportunities provided me with a renewed passion for pursuing a career in law and a solid foundation to enter the legal profession.”
Mr Ali was grateful for the inspiration, support and encouragement he had received particularly from Mr Clark, Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and Magistrate Seini Puamau.
“My Bachelor of Law (LLB) was four years, and during this time I was recognised as the top student for Environmental Law in 2019. My Master of Law (LLM) was a oneyear course,” he said.
“I want to thank my parents for their unconditional selflessness, unwavering support, and countless sacrifices that have opened many doors for me to grow and succeed, and all of the things they have taught me.”
Mr Ali is the son of Dr Husnoor Ali and Dr Odille Chang.
