On Thursday, Children of Andrews Kindergarten dressed up in Girmitiya costumes to understand the importance of Girmit’s years of hard work and sacrifices in Fiji.
It had been a week-long programme for the youngsters. Head teacher, Sangeeta Singh said reviving the Girmit event was important for t children as they would understand their roots and also learn of the sacrifices their ancestors made.
“It is very important for the children to know our roots. This remembrance is important because it also teaches the children the importance of hard work, sacrifice and determination.
She said children nowadays don’t have any knowledge because they are attached to the Western culture.
“So it is important to set up this historical event to remind them. At this early age we have to lay the foundation.”
“Today is the special Girmit costume day. We sang Girmit songs and poems and displayed materials that were used by our ancestors those times,” she added.
