Don’t be fooled by the rugged looks and masculinity that is Vern Cotter. The head coach of the Flying Fijians loves to be on the water, fishing.

He also loves eating freshlycaught fish.

But Mr Cotter confesses to his grave dislike of eels.

One thing not many people know about him is that he lived on an island for five years.

The New Zealander plays the guitar as a form of relaxation.

The 60-year-old Kiwi farmer of Te Puke, Tauranga, says the main asset of Fiji’s tourism sector is the Fijian people.

“They are always kind and welcoming,” he told SunBiz.

“It is the first thing people mention after their visit to the island.

“Of course, it has some beautiful spots.”

Mr Cotter spent 10 years playing for Counties Manukau in New Zealand, before representing a number of clubs in France.

He coached Clermont, and was director of rugby for Montpellier.

Known for his no-nonsense approach, he also was head coach for Scotland
