The Keep Suva Clean campaign participants collected more than 300kg of waste with the help from the Fiji National Provident Fund and its stakeholders on Saturday.
As part of its corporate social responsibility programme, FNPF partnered with the International Union for the Conservation of Nature Oceania (IUCN), Suva City Council, HFC Bank and the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission to collect waste.
Over 200 people helped clean the Nabukalou Creek and Suva foreshore.
FNPF General Manager Human Resources, Ravinesh Krisha said it was important to keep the city clean as Fiji moves towards a greener country.
“We need to keep our city clean and we’re proud to have been able to launch this initiative, which we will conduct more frequently covering other areas in the city as well,” he said.
“I encourage other organizations to do the same and welcome them to join our campaign as we work towards a greener Fiji.
Waste collected included plastic materials, metal, paper, wood, glass, household items and general items. These were all audited for categorizations by IUCN.
Regional Programme Coordinator for IUCN Oceania, Kenneth Kassem acknowledged the efforts of all participants, confirming their support for future similar campaigns.
“Last year, we collected more than 1,000kg of waste so today’s collection is an indication that there is improvement and hopefully in time, we will have no rubbish to pick up at all,” he said.
