Rabuka’s Trip to India

- Ajai Kumar,

Speculations are flying wild on the reasons Rabuka has gone to India.

This is round two. In round one, both the Prime Minister and the Attorney General did the same and disappeared overseas without informing the public. It was known much later that both went for their respective medical reviews. Their stance of non-disclosure probably comes from the belief that personal medical care is private business.

Let it be known for the umpteenth time that when a person goes into public life, he or she should understand and appreciate issues they may consider private for a private individual can become matters of reasonable public interest when that person runs for a public office. If a private matter affects or is likely to affect the performance of the office holder’s duties, most people would agree that it is no longer private.

So, my message to all those who are standing for the upcoming general elections is to understand that the moment they file their nominations, they become matters of public interest and they need to keep people informed of what they are up to.

Remember also that your close family members also become public commodities and if you are not ready to disclose and respond, then stay where you are. If you cannot handle the heat, my advice is not to go into the kitchen.
