Training Helped Secure Employment for Graduate
Sheenal Shimran Kumar, a graduate of the Class of 2020, described her Fiji National University (FNU) journey as a very special time in her life.
The alumna who completed her Bachelor of Science in Food Technology from the FNU’s College of Engineering, Science and Technology (CEST) said attending University provided her with a great learning experience and pushed her to strive for academic excellence.
“As a food science and technology student I learnt to perform the scientific analysis of different food products and their components in a testing lab before they are made available for public
consumption,” said Kumar.
Employment
Kumar added that as soon as she delved into the Food Technology programme four years ago, she found out that the opportunities for a successful
career were immense.
The proud graduate had secured employment in the food industry and she is thankful to FNU for preparing her for the job sector and practical attachment.
“The knowledge I gained in FNU food laboratory courses including the knowledge of instrument and equipment used with their operating methods and techniques were helpful for me to secure a job and carry out my current role effectively and efficiently.”
“I highly recommend this programme to everyone who is thinking about a career in the food industry,” said the former DAV College student.
Industry demand
FNU’s Head of Department Food Science and Home Economics, Arti Pillay said there is an increased demand for food technology graduates from the industry due to increased challenges and innovations relating to food production and processing, food safety and sustainability.
“Our graduates are employed in a wide range of industries, inclusive of food manufacturing industries, academia, biosecurity, respective science laboratories and various government ministries,” highlighted Pillay.
Mr Pillay further elaborated that FNU’s Food Technology programmes are widely recognised locally, as well as in the regional industries.
“Our regional student enrolment has increased by three-fold in the last two years due to the increased need for food technologists in the region to sustain food systems or increase production and processing of safe, quality and nutritious food through a new and innovative process.”
FNU’s Bachelor of Science in Food Technology programme is offered on a full-time mode for a three-year duration at FNU’s College of Engineering, Science and Technology, Nabua Campus.
Students can also enrol on a part-time mode.
