MR SAYED-KHAIYUM ENCOURAGED STUDENTS TO MAKE GOOD USE OF THE WALESI PLATFORM BY USING THE EDUCATIONAL CHANNELS.

‘In the next three to six months, you’ll see many areas in Fiji being connected.

There is something like about 300 sites in Fiji that does not have mobile phone connection, about 95 per cent of Fiji actually has mobile phone connectivity.’

Over the next three to six months Government will set up towers for antennas in selected areas around Fiji to ensure mobile connectivity for all Fijians.

This new development was revealed by the Attorney-General and Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum while launching the Walesi platform in the highlands of Nasesevia in Nadi on Monday.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum encouraged students to make good use of the Walesi platform by using the educational channels.

The area of Nasesevia caters for 74 students who attend Nasesevia Secondary School, 180 students who attend Buruwa Youth Primary School and 17 children that attend the Buruwa Kindergarten.

It was through the government’s initiative in 2016 that saw the construction of Nasesevia Secondary School.

He said there were still small pockets throughout Fiji that weren’t connected

which was another initiative that Government had been engaged in.

“In the next three to six months, you’ll see many areas in Fiji being connected,” he said.

“There is something like about 300 sites in Fiji that does not have mobile phone connection, about 95 per cent of Fiji actually has mobile phone connectivity.

“So the way that we actually connect it is that we have to set up towers, these towers cost a lot of money they can range from a million dollars to half a million dollars or so.

“And before the old system was that we get mobile phone companies and ask them to tender so they put up a

tower and then we pay them some money and different mobile phone companies would do that.

“But now what Government is doing is actually funding the towers and we get the different mobile phone companies to put in the transmitters. So you can have the choice, you can have Vodafone or you can have Digicel.

“Please be rest assured that we will slowly but surely ensure that you get all the modern day facilities in this part of the highlands of Nadi also.”

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum also reiterated that despite the economy being battered by COVID-19, Government would continue to fund free education for all students.

“We will continue to fund the teacher salaries, we will continue to ensure that teacher salaries actually don’t get reduced or deducted,” he added.

Nasesevia Secondary School principal, Mesulame Uluimoala, acknowledged Government for its assistance while embarking on another milestone in the school.

“With the coming in of our Government assisting us to establish the new Nasesevia Secondary School, what we like to say is thank you so much and today (Monday) we are going through another milestone of having our Walesi platform.”
