Non-payment of levies worries Ballu

There is a possibility in the reduction of the number athletes to the Saipan Pacific Mini Games in the Northern Mariana Islands, as some national federations are yet to pay their levies.

This is a concern to chef de mission Ajay Ballu as deadline has passed.

“Some NF’s have made their payments fully, but there are some that are in the process of getting these levies paid and have made arrangements,” Ballu said.

Ballu indicated that the $2000 per athlete levy was initially due in February 28 and April 30.

A total of 94 and officials (65 men and 29 women) will travel to Saipan for the games.

The Mini Games will be held from June 17 to 25.

“At our team officials meeting early this month, there was a grace period given for all NF’s to pay by May 9, 2022, however some NF’s have made arrangements.

“The total amount of levy paid by the NF’s will confirm the amount of athletes participating in Saipan,” he said.

The COVID-19 status in Saipan is not a worry, says Ballu.

“News from Saipan is that they have three cases per day, however 90 per cent of the population is double vaxed,” he said.

“At the meeting we also advised officials to remind their team to take every precaution and stay COVID free.

“Saipan also has a NO Mask policy, everyone should be double vaxed and it is highly recommended that they get their booster shot.

“However, all Team Fiji members have been advised to use their masks, follow all COVID-19 measures and protocols to stay COVID free,” Ballu added.

The Fijian contingent and hosts Palau are fielding the most number of athletes, they 125 athletes apiece.

Team Fiji is planning to depart on June 9 and to return on the 28.
