NEW TREATMENT PLANT TO BOOST BA WATER SUPPLY

-

As per the Water and Sanitation Strategy within the Government’s 5-year and 20-Year National Development Plan, the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) is committed to providing clean and safe water in adequate quantities to Fijians.

On Wednesday, the authority’s chief executive officer Amit Chanan inspected the ongoing works presently being carried out at the new $8.15m Waiwai Water Treatment Plant in Ba, which would improve authority’s supply capacity in line with this goal.

“The current Waiwai Water Treatment Plant is a conventional system that was built over 60 years ago. With a treatment capacity of 13 million litres per day, the plant is reaching the end of its design life. Especially during extensive rainy seasons when the raw water has high turbidity, the plant is struggling to effectively treat water to meet the customer demand,” Mr Chanan said.

Ba Town has a high number of manufacturing and industrial customers including food manufacturers, providing consistent water quality and quantity is important for these customers. Mr Chanan said that the new treatment plant would provide a treatment capacity of 20 million litres per day, and is designed to treat raw water with high turbidity levels.
