Every single vote counts, says FijiFirst Party general secretary Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

And it is important for everyone to cast their vote.

He gave the reminder during the official opening of the FijiFirst Party office at the Motorex Complex, Nadi Back Road on Saturday.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum, who is also the Attorney-General and Minister for Economy, said all would be told about election dates once Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama chooses a date.

“Please, we have so many people in the last elections who have said to us, that there is no need to vote because you will win in any case, please don’t make that mistake,” he said.

“You may think everybody is a supporter and so many people support us and there’s no point voting. If you all think that, who will vote? So, every single vote counts.”

He said the day would be a public holiday for everyone to cast their vote.

“It is always on a Wednesday. If you work, it is a paid holiday. You get paid for staying home to go and vote,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

“There are over 2000 polling stations in Fiji now. It is easy. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes maximum to go and stand in a line and cast your vote and you can have the rest of the day off.

“And from 6pm you see the result coming out.”

He added that the Prime Minister had confirmed that the elections could be held anywhere from the middle of July all the way up to the first week of January, 2023.

“You will of course be informed about election dates once the Prime Minister chooses a date,” Mr SayedKhaiyum.

“He will visit the President then issue a writ of elections. It is normally done 43 to 45 days before the elections are held.”
