Seeing doctors in their white coat at the Labasa Hospital as a kid, had set the goal for Adi Maisea Baba to become a doctor.

Now studying Bachelor of Medical Health Science (BMHS) at the University of Fiji, she is on her way to achieving this dream.

The 21 year – old from Bucalevu, Koroalau, Cakaudrove said her late grandmother was also one of the main reasons she found her interests in medical studies.

“She was the senior sister nursing matron administrator at the Labasa Hospital,” she said.

“I was brought up by her along with my older brother and I would see the doctors talking to patients, giving them their medicines and all and I told myself that was the career path I wish to pursue.”

Ms Baba is amongst the first batch of students pursuing the

new BMHS programme at UniFiji.

She said the new programme would help her further her medical studies to become a doctor.

BMHS programme at UniFiji will enhance student’s qualifications for potential entry into medical, dentistry, nursing, public health, and other related allied health care programmes.

“Some of the units that the programme covered were very interesting such as telemedicine and digital medicine, helped me understand teh benefits of technology in the medical profession,” she said.

She chooses to study at the University of Fiji, to differ from the path her brother and mom pursued.

“My mother studied at the Fiji National University while my brother studied at the University of the South Pacific. So, I wanted to be the different one and choose to study at UniFiji.”

While studying away from her family in Vanua Levu, she faced the challenge of missing of home and studying.

“Sometimes I miss my family but I have a goal to achieve and that is to graduate.

“So I have to work towards my goal. My family will always be with there to support me.”

A private student at UniFiji, she plans to further her studies into Doctor of Medicine’(MD) or Master’s Degree.

“I also plan to specialsie in becoming a pediatrician because I like looking after kids.”

A pediatrician is a doctor who focuses on the health of infants, children, adolescents and young adults.

Ms Baba attended Holy Family Primary School before completing her secondary school education at Labasa College.

BMHS is a trimester-based course with four units per trimester with a total of 24 units
