Getting the right diagnosis at the right time can go a long way in keeping the condition from worsening says Neuro and Spine specialist Dr Hrishikesh Sarkar.

Dr Sakrar, who is from MIOT International, Chennai, is in Fiji to spearhead a 10-day consultation camp from June 8 to June 18, 2022.

Who is he?

Dr Sarkar is one of the most renowned neurosurgeon in India with 20 years of experience. He has performed more than 3000 brain and spinal surgeries.

Known for his unique expertise in epileptic surgeries, Dr Sarkar is also proficient in keyhole, endoscopic and minimally invasive surgeries for treating brain tumors across all age groups.

He is also an expert in combinatorial neurorestorative strategies such as nerve transfers and epidural cord stimulation in paraplegia, hemiplegia due to stroke, traumatic brain and spinal cord injury.

Dr Sarkar said it was important for parents to take their children to hospital when they suffer from epilepsy.

“I would be seeing patients both children and adults with brain and spine disorders focusing mainly towards surgical illnesses such as brain tumor, low back pain, neck pain, children with epilepsy which is not getting controlled with medication,” Dr Sarkar said.

“We are fully booked and probably looking at 12 patients a day which would be 110 to 120 for the 10 days.”

Epilepsy

“It is a common illness and it has not come out in the open and there are many reasons for it,” he said.

“One is that it happens in children and there is a social stigma attached to that thinking that some supernatural power has taken over them and they go to multiple practitioners who are not medical doctors and don’t seek scientific treatment,” Dr Sarkar said.

“Fortunately the treatment options are there, they need to seek medical consultation with the paediatrician and GP and very often it can be controlled with medication.

“The first symptoms are seizure. Epilepsy does not always mean seizing phenomenon, it can be a waken stare and this is often picked up by the school teacher in the classroom. Teachers tend to say that these children are not paying attention in class which could lead to learning disturbance, memory disturbance and concentration problem.

“Epilepsy can be seen as early as a child is born and can be present in late adulthood and even elderly. It is common in young children as this is the time the brain is being developed and epilepsy is due to the abnormal electrical activity in the brain. It is crucial that the parents of children suffering from epilepsy are well informed.”

Dr Sarkar said he has come to Fiji with a purpose and it was to help children and adults suffering from disorders related to brain, spinal cord, those afflicted with epilepsy, paralysis, stroke and those who are seeking cure and further upliftment of their condition and their existing state.

They are currently screening patients.

The spine and neuro consultation clinic is held at MIOT Pacific Medical, 98 Amy Street (beside Ministry of Health-Namosi House).
