Students live healthy lifestyle by practising good composting
Central College Lautoka head girl, Sneha Karan says practising good composting in schools is not only beneficial for the environment but will also allow students to live a healthy lifestyle.
This was after the Soroptimist International Lautoka group donated two compost bins to the Lautoka Central Kindergarten and Central College Lautoka yesterday.
This donation is in support of the month of June, dedicated towards sustaining the environment.
Sneha said the initiative was welcomed by all students because it would assist them in practising good composting at home.
Central College Lautoka
College head boy, Sumil Sharma said it would help students reduce waste in school.
“This will help the school use organic manure and to practise using the three R’s (Reducing, Reusing and Recycling),” he said.
College principal, Amant Lal, highlighted that composting was also another educational topic for the students being an important part of their daily life.
A demonstration on practising good composting was done by the president of the Soroptimist International Lautoka group president and college vice principal, Vinesh Prasad to the children of Lautoka Central Kindergarten.
Lautoka Central Primary School
Lautoka Central Primary School head teacher, Sagar Singh, said it was the first composting bin for the kindergarten, whereas the primary school had constructed three composting areas many years ago.
“Practising the three R’s has given many opportunities to the students to sort out their rubbish and see how their vegetable and fruit peelings can be reused,” Mr Singh said.
“This will greatly benefit our flower and vegetable gardens.”
The objective of the initiative is to create awareness and advocate on the three R’s to all students.
It is also part of the fight against climate change.
