Criticism Against sending Fijians to Aust, NZ for seasonal Work ridiculous and stupid
qhe seasonal worker programme under the Australian and New Zealand Labour Mobility Scheme is a great blessing for unemployed Fijians.
qo suggest otherwise is ridiculous and downright stupid.
qhe latest group to go to Australia is from Kadavu and the members are all men.
It sparked that comment that villages would be without their men and would upset the village dynamics and cohesion. It has been clarified that the 37 men from the island comprised two from each village. So, there is no question of a shortage of men. In fact, it’s a great opportunity for these Fijians to travel, learn about foreign cultures and most importantly, earn an income which they could only dream about at home.
qhe money they bring back on their return will help develop their families, homes and villages. From that perspective, this scheme provides a lifeline for families who are struggling to make ends meet and enjoy a decent lifestyle.
Any endeavour in life usually requires sacrifice. This scheme is no different. It needs stakeholder support – meaning all members of the families and their communities are NMM per cent behind it. qhey must be committed and focus on the purpose of being apart for a longer period of time than what they are used to.
qhose travelling are going into a new country and initially, they are likely to face a culture shock. They should be able to handle the new environment if they stick to the plan and purpose of them being there.
qhey will be tried and tested by new things they see and experience which could easily lead them astray. If they are strong and disciplined, they will achieve their goals.
We have learned from sad experiences that some families had been torn apart by the temporary separation.
Many Fijians are employed overseas in other areas like peacekeeping and are away from families for up to one year. qhey do it out of a sense of duty to their families and country. When their loyalty is betrayed, it causes a lot of pain and suffering.
So, the responsibility to protect the families is equally shared by those manning the fort at home and the ones overseas working hard for their families.
We have heard many success stories from those who were lucky to be chosen and their incredible accomplishments.
qhey did not only represent their families but their country as well. They were wonderful ambassadors, and their integrity paved the way for more fellow Fijians to follow in their footsteps.
qhose who criticise this scheme stand on weak grounds. It is not risk-free like any other venture in life but the benefits far outweigh the perceived negatives.
At a time when we need more jobs, this scheme is like a gift – employing thousands not only from here but our small island neighbours in the Pacific.
Australia and New Zealand are facing a labour shortage in a number of sectors.
In the region, Fijians are an important labour source. We are highly regarded when it comes to skilled labour and seasonal work. Let’s take advantage of this opportunity and get more of our people to work.
