It’s Now or Never: Seruvakula
Last chance for our women reps to impress the coaches for Rugby World Cup selection
Earn your spot in the Rooster Chicken Fijiana XVs squad if you are to play in the Women’s Rugby World Cup in New Zealand from October 8 to November 12.
These were the words of Fijiana head coach Senirusi Seruvakula as he looks ahead to next Friday’s Test against world’s ranked
No.3 side Canada at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. It’s understood that Seruvakula could name his 32-member World Cup squad after the Canada match.
Speaking to SUNsports, he said the two Test matches would be used as selection matches.
“The girls have to lift their game if they want to be selected in the final squad of the world cup,” Seruvakula said.
“This also applies to the Fijiana Sevens players who will join us. The game against the Maori Wahine was where we tested the capabilities and the combinations.
“The teams we will face at the World Cup are physical and fast. We need girls that can match and counter what our opposition bring on the day. My coaching staff are looking at these areas for selection.”
He said the players have to prove themselves if they want to make the final squad.
“There’s a lot of things that we have learned from the Super W. We just need to lift our performance and try to be consistent.”
Fijiana XVs No.8 Sereima Leweniqila said the arrival of the Women’s Rugby World Cup has boosted their preparations.
“After a decade of playing rugby I didn’t know what I was playing for until I saw the World Cup here in Fiji. This tournament happens every four years so we have to work hard to take our chances. I reminded the girls that the Cup is the reason why we should play hard for our families and fans.”
