One of the main source of transportation on the island Rotuma is by motorbike. The beautiful volcanic island and islets rests on some 465 kilometers North of Fiji.

For many people visiting the island either for work or for leisure, riding a motorbike is a must-do on their bucket list.

According to Rigamoto Kafoa who has owned a motorbike for nearly five years, it is cheaper compared to lorries and other smaller vehicles.

He said many opt for the ride because it would give them a sense of what life could be on the island.

There are more than 100 bikes on the island with a population of about 2000 people.

What makes a motorbike special?

It allows you to see mother nature and its creativity at its best. You will observe its peacefulness and appreciate nature.

How often do people use motorbikes?

Daily. This is a common mode of transportation and you will hardly see it anywhere else in Fiji.

How much does

it cost to travel on motorbikes?

From my district of Juju to the Ahau Government Station, it takes about 20 minutes and it costs $10 one way compared to lorries amounting to nearly $50 one way.

Would you recommend it to visitors?

Definitely. It is something that makes Rotuma special and you should add it on your bucket list when you visit us.

Stonebridge

There is also a place in Rotuma that connected by a bridge built by mother nature.

It is called the Stonebridge and many people have admired it.

It takes about 20 minutes from where a farm road ends to get there.

A number of visitors including civil servants have made their way there after they heard about it.

Lanieta Gonewai, Vuadreu Morrison and Lepani Senibua shared their experience with Sunbiz after ending their two weeks of work on the island through the Rights, Empowerment and Cohesion (REACH) project.

Why do you think the Stonebridge is an iconic place to visit?

This is a rare site and for Rotuma to have this is something they should be proud of, Ms Gonewai said.

Mr Senibua said: “Everyone visiting the island should pencil this in their bucket list. We are so fortunate to have made it here thanks to our good friends here.”
