Taxi driver remanded for allegedly stabbing girlfriend
Ataxi driver has been remanded in custody for allegedly stabbing his girlfriend after an argument broke out between them at a secluded place at Wailevu, Labasa, on December 12.
Accused, Sanjeshwar Chand, 41, appeared before Magistrate Senileba Levaci at the Labasa Magistrates Court yesterday.
He was charged with one count of attempted murder after he allegedly used a knife to injure his girlfriend, Neha Chand.
Police prosecutor Vishal Verma objected to bail.
Constable Verma said the offence was of a serious nature and involved a high public interest.
He informed the court that the 23-year-old victim was in a critical condition at the Labasa Hospital and had a slim chance to recover from her injuries.
Constable Verma said the victim sustained serious injuries to the neck region and encountered multiple injuries to her body.
The prosecutor also informed the court that Chand had consumed weedicide to allegedly commit suicide.
Constable Verma said the accused had, in his statement, informed the investigating officers that he would recommit suicide once released.
Legal Aid Commission lawyer Reema Raj informed the court that she would inform her client of all procedures.
Hence, Magistrate Levaci remanded the accused and transferred the matter to the High Court in Labasa.
She refused, on the grounds of: serious offence, possible interference with witnesses and of high public interest.
Magistrate Levaci instructed the accused to seek a psychologist to deal with the stress management issues he faced.
The case has been adjourned for mention to February 9, next year.
