Any claims on the issue of polling agents not being allowed in the Counting Centre and not able to access information need to be properly verified. Mohammed Saneem Supervisor of Elections

Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem called on a social media user to provide him with a photo as evidence after she claimed that the Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum was at the Counting Centre on Friday night.

She claimed Mr Sayed-Khaiyum had unlawfully entered the Counting Centre in a private vehicle.

In a press conference on Saturday, Mr Saneem said he would then be able to charge Mr Sayed-Khaiyum for breaching the electoral law. He said political party candidates were not allowed beyond the fence at the Counting Centre.

“Outside the Counting Centre are containers which house the election materials that have come in from polling stations now. They are well labelled,” he said.

He also dismissed claims that polling agents were not allowed to go inside the Counting Centre.

“Any claims on the issue of polling agents not being allowed in the Counting Centre and not able to access information need to be properly verified,” he said.

While dispelling all the rumours, Mr Saneem said there was a registry at the Counting Centre.

He said a polling agent or party representative going to the Count Centre needed to sign in the registry. They were supposed to be accredited to a particular political party.

“When they come and sign in, they have to bring their polling agent form. We do not restrict polling agents from going in and out from the Count Centre,” he said.

“So, these are the records of the polling agents that have come and left,” he said.

He said only party agents were allowed beyond the fence.
