Akbar resigns, Ravunawa likely to step in
Expect a new face in Parliament this week.
This is after the former Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Rosy Akbar resigned from Parliament citing health issues.
FijiFirst general secretary Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum confirmed this.
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said Ms Akbar had not resigned from the political party, but from Parliament.
Penioni Ravunawa, who earned a total of 541 votes in the 2022 General Election, is likely to fill in the seat vacated by Ms Akbar.
Mr Ravunawa is a dentist and a pastor of the Apostle Fellowship International.
Meanwhile, the Acting Supervisor of Elections Ana Mataiciwa said the Fijian Elections Office has yet to receive a notice from the FijiFirst party.
Ms Mataiciwa said the political party general secretary had to write a letter advising the FEO of her resignation.
“Maybe we will get an official letter tomorrow (today),” she said.
“After we receive the letter the Electoral Commission will then advise the Parliament of her resignation.”
Ms Mataiciwa said the FEO would let the media know when it receives her resignation.
