Fiji FACT Top 8 Battle Continues

The battle to secure a top eight spot in the Digicel Fiji FACT tournament continues this weekend.

This is another round of the Digicel Fiji Premier League competitio­n, which determines the qualifiers.

In a thriller on Sunday at the Uprising Sports Centre in Pacific Harbour, Deuba, Navua in a must-win clash takes on Labasa at 3pm.

The Babasiga Lions have registered two wins to move to fourth spot.

Coach Johan Leewai said their 3-0 win over Ba have boosted their chances of qualifying.

Down the Coral Coast road to Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, sees hosts Nadroga take on Tailevu/Naitasiri.

“We have one more game left against Nadroga and we aim for a win to be in the top eight.” said Tailevu/Naitasiri coach Tagi Vonolagi after they beat Navua 2-1 at Ratu Cakobau Park, Nausori, last Sunday.

The Imdad Ali- coached Ba side is looking to make things right against minnows Tavua on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the country’s football fraternity is saddened by the passing away of former Tailevu/Naitasiri and national team defender Govind Lal. Lal died at his home in Nakasi, Nausori, on Monday. He was part of the national team in the late 1970s. He played alongside former stars like

Samisoni Ratu, Ram Naresh, Madhwan, Dewan Chand, Tutunisau Caucau and the list goes on.

Fiji Football Associatio­n president Rajesh Patel acknowledg­ed Lal’s huge contributi­on Lal towards the developmen­t of football in the country.

“It’s a huge loss,” Patel said.

“He had been a great footballer and an inspiratio­nal leader of his time. “I convey my heartfelt sympathy and deepest condolence to the grieving family and I pray to the Almighty that his soul rest in peace.”

Lal is survived by his wife, only daughter, son-in-law, and three grandchild­ren.
