Nadi hosts inaugural $10k Girmit Championsh­ip

Thirteen teams are taking part in the inaugural $10,000 Girmit Pacific Championsh­ip at Prince Charles Park in Nadi starting tomorrow and rounding up on Monday May 15.

The football event is organised by Global Girmit Centre, Korovuto Sewa Santha and World Hindu Federation.

The pools and draw were launched at Korovuto Primary School early this week.

Chairman Pravin Singh has confirmed that the three-day tournament will be an annual event to mark the national Girmit Remembranc­e Day.

“We can confirm that 13 teams around the country will compete in the premier division while four teams in are in the Masters division and four teams are in Legends,” Singh said.

“All the winning teams have a stake in the prize money of $10,000. This is just the start of a celebratio­n and sports carnival. We have 16 teams participat­ing in the netball competitio­n.”

Singh added some overseas teams were not able to travel this year. “Overseas teams have called to say while they will miss this year’s competitio­n they will definitely be coming over next year,” Singh said. The premier division winner will collect $3000, runner-up takes $1500. Both the Masters’ and Legends’ division winners get $1000 while the runners- up receive $500 each. Pools: Main - Pool 1 - Vunimono (Nasinu), Namaka, GFC Nawaka, Korovuto (Nadi), Pool 2 Green Stars, Nadroga Stallions, Bua. Pool 3 Vomo Islands, Hakwa Sports (Rewa), Manasa Boys (Valley Road). Pool 4 Police (Nadi), Saunaka Tigers, Nawaka Lions.

Masters – Namaka, Valley, Northland and Rewa and Legends – Lautoka, Rewa, Korovuto and Northland.
