Ovalau Women XVs press on regardless

- IOANE ASIOLI SUVA

Rugby is taking a grip at the old capital city with the women side taming Northern Bulls 19-7 in their Royal Tea Ranadi Cup clash at Nasau Park, Levuka, last Saturday. The Josefa Daveta- coached side will take on Northland this Saturday.

“We lost 61 – 7 to the Nasinu side but we managed to win last week against Northern Bulls if we win we can progress further in the Ranadi Cup points table,” Daveta said.

“We marched into camp yesterday. We will work on our defence.” It has never been easy sailing for the Ovalau women with many challenges– the unavailability of players top the list.

“Some days we train with just seven girls until Friday where we have our full-set team of 21 players,” he said.

Majority of the players consist of Years 12 and 13 students.

“It’s difficult for the girls to make their way to the ground as they come from different villages and transport is an issue especially since it’s during the two weeks holiday.

“There are also some tertiary students and a few players who travel from Suva by boat.

“These players pay their own fare as they normally arrive on Friday morning.”

Daveta hopes his team will maintain discipline and utilise their defence against the Northland side.
