The construction of the new Savusavu Municipal Market is on track. Savusavu Town Council chief executive officer Seema Dutt said those involved were trying their best to complete the project by November, 2023, despite numerous challenges
The groundbreaking ceremony of the two-storey building was carried out by the former Minister for Local Government, Premila Kumar, on October 27, 2022.
“The team consists of a lead consultant and project engineer from Chand Engineering Consultants Limited, architect from AAPiDesign, service engineer from Building Services Consulting Engineers and the contractor is from Jenn’s Construction Pte Limited,” Ms Dutt said.
“This $1million construction project is funded by the Fijian Government and UN Women markets for change project.”
The market will have a userfriendly elevator for physically challenged vendors and users of the premises.
The ground Level will house the market vendors, coffee shops, information booth, handicraft, and kiosks.
Level one will have small micro vendors, kiosks, a conference room and three restaurants.
The new market will also have a public convenience.
Ms Dutt said 184 vendors could be accommodated and the market could provide services for the en
tire Cakaudrove Province of about 60,000 people, including yachties, tourists, and hoteliers. Savusavu Vendors Association president Ana Vita said they were looking forward to the project opening. “Recently we have noticed an increase in the number of market
vendors from 168 to 180 in the various sections of the market,” Ms Vita said.
“This shows that more people are being motivated to be independent and make a living for themselves.
