GPS training to enhance forest works
Fiji Pine has taken new steps in training employees on using the Global Positioning System (GPS) in some of the company’s forests.
The training sessions engaged the company’s field officers from Ra, Bua and Macuata pine stations. A company statement said the field officers received knowledge and experience in using the GPS specifically for field operation markings.
“The training was based on using the GPS device for field markings, providing the location of the company field operation, and this provides data to our Geography Information System (GIS) department that establishes maps of the operation locality,” the company statement said.
“The training was carried out with our Enforcement, Silviculture, Forest Management and Forest Protection and Inventory officers.
“The main objective of this training is to help our field officers gain sufficient knowledge of the usage of a GPS device so that they will understand the importance of collecting data through field markings.
“It will also help in retrieving all accurate information in their respective operation areas.”
The three remaining stations, Nabou, Lololo and Nadi, will receive their training sessions in midApril.
