RULES AND STANDARDS OF CARE:
Freedom from Hunger and Thirst: A nutritious diet and fresh, clean water are fundamental. Diets vary by animal; farm animals need good quality green grass and water, while dogs and cats thrive on meat-based diets with age-appropriate kibble (puppies until 6-12 months, kittens until 6 months); Freedom from Discomfort: Provide shelter from the elements. Horses and farm animals need shade and rain cover, while dogs and cats require comfortable, safe sleeping spaces indoors or in a dog house to escape the sun and rain;
Freedom from Pain, Injury, or Disease: Regular veterinary checkups, vaccinations, and deworming at Animals Fiji are crucial. Desexing your pet by 6 months old prevents diseases, injuries from roaming, and unwanted litters;
Freedom to Express Normal Behaviour: Allow your pet to engage in natural behaviours. Socialisation, exercise, and playtime are essential. Herd animals like horses and cows need companionship to feel secure. Cats enjoy climbing and hiding spots, while dogs require interaction with other dogs and humans. Chaining a dog is not only cruel but also illegal under the Act’s Section 3.1.g, which prohibits neglecting to exercise a chained or confined dog daily; Freedom from Fear and Distress: Create a safe and secure environment. Herd animals need companions for comfort. Cats require high places to feel safe.
Dogs need space to interact with other dogs while also having the ability to retreat. Provide a safe haven during loud noises, ensure access to escape the rain, keep them away from traffic and dog fights (desexing helps!), and shower them with love and companionship.
