The Sigatoka amphitheatre is expected to be the stage where stories from communities will unfold, where laughter echoes, and where community rhythm revolves around shared experiences.

This was mentioned by the Minister for Housing and Local Government Maciu Katamotu after he commissioned the amphitheatre at the Sigatoka Riverbank on Friday. He acknowledged the contribution of $90,000, by the

People’s Republic of China, in which $37,000 was utilise for the construction of the amphitheatre.

“The balance of $53,000 from the grant will be used in the re-sealing of the tramline car park,” he said. He said in addition to the funding from China provided solar lights, of which five had been used for the project.

“The amphitheatre will accommodate 350 seats in any event.” Mr Katamotu said amphitheatre would generate income to the town. “It’s a place where families will create lasting memories, where artists will showcase their talents, and where the magic of live performances will bring joy to our lives. “In building this amphitheatre, we have created a space for cultural exchange, fostering creativity, and for strengthening the bonds that make us a tight-knit community. “This venue is a testament to our commitment to the arts, to nurturing local talent, and to providing a platform for self-expression. This is a boost to Sigatoka in its efforts to rebuild its image as a tourist town. There will be a new source of entertainment for our visitors in town, which will also provide them insights of our culture and journey as a nation.”

Chinese Ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian said the amphitheatre was a symbol of the Fijian people’s pursuit

of a better life.

“Sigatoka is a tourist town. Over the past three decades, tourism played an important role in the fast

and steady development of the local economy. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the economy and employment took a major hit,” he

said.

“It’s the first of its kind in Sigatoka and even the whole Fiji.”

Mr Jian said the new stage facility could host cultural performances and various activities.
