MGM Duo dedicate win to supporters
Charlotte Serevi was one of the many first-time medallists for Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School (MGM) at this year’s Coca Cola Games.
The 14-year-old won silver in 100 metres final behind teammate Sera Nasilivata and gold in the 4x100 metres finals for the subjunior girls division.
For her mother Phillippa, Ms Serevi’s success in the sport is a dream come true. “Somebody had prophesied over her as a baby that she would be an athlete and win trophies,” she said.
“We didn’t take notice until she ran in the Chow Games for Nehru Primary School and won silver.”
Ms Serevi, who is originally from Moturiki, Lomaiviti joined MGM last year to take her skills to the next level.
She didn’t medal at the Coca Cola Games in 2023, but the experience paved the way for a winning run at this year’s Games.
Her first medal was in the 100 metres final on Thursday night.
“It was a big achievement for me; my mother was in tears and my father was very happy,” she told Fiji Sun in an interview this week.
“Next year, we’ll be aiming higher.” Ms Serevi credited her “determination” and the support from people around her for helping her reach new heights and grow her confidence.
Meanwhile, Sera Nasilivata of MGM slipped and fell just metres short of winning the 200 metres sub-junior girls final at the 2024 Coca Cola Games.
Looking back, she said she’s grateful it happened and was happy for the winner of that race, Sesenieli Nasoke of Suva Grammar School.
The freshman from Doi, Ono-i-Lau contributed to the record seven gold won by the MGM sub-junior girls at the recently concluded Fiji Finals.
In her first year competing at the secondary school level, she won the sub-junior girls 100 metres final and helped MGM win the 100 metres relay.
Ms Nasilivata and her teammate Charlotte Serevi spoke to Fiji Sun this week about a “winning” culture at MGM.
Ms Nasilivata’s mother, Maraia Adi Turaganisolevu said the whole family was proud of her performance.
