16,902 electric/hybrid vehicles on road in Fiji
There are 16,902 electric/hybrid vehicles with valid registrations on road in Fiji as of 25 April 2024.
This was confirmed by the Land Transport Authority chief executive officer, Irimaia Rokosawa.
Mr Rokosawa said the first electric vehicle was registered in Fiji about a decade ago.
In a dataset, it tracked the total number of electric/hybrid vehicles registered in Fiji over the past decade, indicating a trend in the adoption of electric vehicles.
The data revealed fluctuations in electric/hybrid vehicle registrations over the years.
In 2015, there were 896 electric/hybrid vehicles registered, indicating a relatively low adoption rate.
By 2016, there was a significant surge in electric/hybrid vehicles registrations, reaching 5092, possibly due to increased awareness, availability of models, or Government incentives.
However, in subsequent years, Mr Rokosawa said there was a decline in electric/hybrid vehicle registrations, with fluctuations likely influenced by factors such as changes in Government policies, economic conditions, and the availability of electric/hybrid vehicles infrastructure.
The year 2020 stands out with a spike in electric/hybrid vehicle registrations, reaching 1196, which could be attributed to various factors such as increased environmental awareness, technological advancements, as well as Government incentives focused on environmentally friendly sustainable transportation.
The data for 2021 and 2022 shows a decrease in electric/hybrid vehicle registrations compared to 2020, possibly due to market saturation, supply chain disruptions, or changes in policies affecting electric/hybrid vehicles adoption.
Overall, the data indicates a dynamic landscape of electric/hybrid vehicles adoption, influenced by a multitude of factors, including technological advancements, market conditions, and Government initiatives.
The LTA has implemented a stringent vehicle inspection system for first registration of vehicles for the purpose of issuance of the vehicle fitness and wheel tax.
