- Feedback: leonec@fijisun.com.fj

The Lautoka Golf Club will celebrate the Girmit Day celebrations in its own unique way next Monday (May 13).

The hosting of the 2 men 18 holes Ambrose event, being the first of 2024 with over $200,000 set aside for the four-day Girmit Carnival with Lautoka being the centre of attraction and our country’s President Ratu Williame Katonivere being the chief guest. LGC Trustees chairman, Raymond Singh is disappointed that part of the celebration will see the hosting of a number of sports, including golf. Unfortunately, nothing is set aside for golf at the LGC that has been hosting national events continuously from 1931 since the Colonial Sugar Refining era (CSR).

Former world’s number one golfer Vijay Singh’s name appears prominently on LGC’s Honours Board. “LGC has secured the support from Angeline Cortassa and Peter Cortassa of Sydney, Australia to stage the Girmit Day Golf celebration,” Singh said.

Last year, a massive $500,000 Girmit celebration budget did not brighten the lives of many struggling Fijians, but LGC being just a small club, has been giving out thousands and thousands of dollars towards charity and many underprivileged families.

Meanwhile, visitors and other club members are most welcome to be part of the Girmit Day Golf celebration with fantastic prizes up for grabs.
