FOR Brij and Jagindar Dayal, forty years of marriage started out as a challenge because of their different backgrounds. It was love at first sight for Brij, now 60, when he caught a glimpse of Jagindar in her Xavier College uniform as she was walking home after school one day – more than 40 years ago. “I was working at our quarry helping my father one afternoon when I saw this beautiful girl in blue skirt and white blouse enjoying her ice block as she walked on the street. I remember that day vividly like it was yesterday,”Brij said. It was not an easy feat to win Jagindar’s heart as she was a Sikh and Brij a Hindu – the different religious and cultural backgrounds were a huge barrier at the time. “Jagindar’s family are Sikhs and I belonged to a totally different religion that at the time made it impossible for me to pursue her because of fear of being ridiculed and criticized,” Brij said. Despite the obstacles, Brij went on to confess his love for Jagindar to his parents, saying he wouldn’t love anyone else but her. “My father, having my best interests at heart, knew I was not joking and that I had fallen in love with Jagindar. He was so courageous that one day he went to Jagindar’s home and met with her parents to convey my love for her. His late father, Mr M.R.Dayal was a well-known, established businessman in the soccer mad town of Ba at that time, which enabled the two families to come to a compromise for the lovebirds. “They were shocked at first, but after some time it sunk in that I was not going to give up and I continued to pursue Jagindar.” The two families eventually came to an agreement and a year or so later the committed pair had a Sikh wedding, following the wishes of Jagindar’s family. Fast forward 40 years, and Brij and Jagindar have two sons and three daughters who have given them eight grandchildren who keep them on their toes. The couple are joint directors of their family business in Ba – Dayals Quarries Limited.

Love will keep us alive. Jagindar and Brij Dayal 40 years on and still going strong.
