On October 17th, the second annual “Born from Fire” three dimensional art exhibition opens at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva. Following 2017’s acclaimed inaugural exhibition - “The Art of Glass and Metal” , this years exhibition is entitled “From Ocean to Forest”. Entry to the exhibition is free and it will be open to the public from October 18th -24th. The exhibition is the brainchild of two of Fiji’s best known 3 dimensional artists, Alice Hill from Hot Glass Fiji and Shane Bower from Imagination in Metal. It was established with the goal of showcasing the high quality of sculptural art from Fiji, and the first year, which featured both individual and collaborative works from Alice and Shane, was a great success and very well attended. To build on this and towards the goal of displaying the wealth of traditional and contemporary sculptural art in Fiji across a variety of mediums, 2018 will feature new works from Alice and Shane and also the work of Sonny Sofe, a Nadi based artist who creates fabulous carved pieces from wood and balabala (tree ferns). Fiji and the Islands of the South Pacific are renowned for their stunning traditions of wood carving, and Sonny’s work is skilled, intricate and beautiful. The studios of both Hot Glass Fiji and Imagination in Metal are open to visitors during working hours. Alice’s Glassblowing studio & gallery is located on Korotogo’s famous Sunset Strip on the Coral Coast, whilst Shane’s workshop is to be found in the beautiful town of Savusavu on Vanua Levu. The exhibition is being held in Suva’s iconic Grand Pacific Hotel - a beautiful building in its own right, and a fitting location for this stunning exhibition.
