Samoa youngster shocks Kable

- By TALEBULA KATE in Apia, Samoa

FRANCO Caffarelli of Samoa created an upset at the 2019 Pacific Games winning gold over favourite and defending champion, Glenn Kable of Fiji in the double barrel event at the Tafaigata Shooting Range yesterday.

Caffarelli, 19, said it felt great to win on home soil.

“It’s my first gold medal in an international game and I’m really proud of this,” Caffarelli said.

Caffarelli, who resides in Italy, said Kable was a very good shooter.

“It’s sad to see him drop one target, but it happens.”

Caffarelli scored a perfect 100 points along with silver medallist Tuanua Degage of Tahiti in the qualifying rounds.

Degage lost out in the final gold medal shootout.

Meanwhile, Kable who scored 99 points in the qualifying round said it was a tough day yesterday.

The four-time Olympian won the bronze medal after a shootout with Moeva Bambridge of Tahiti

“The light changed a lot and there was a lot of humidity. It rained half a dozen times throughout the day,” Kable said.

“It was difficult conditions but the targets were very good, no excuse for missing one.

“No idea what I did wrong there, I guess it’s just a little bit tight and the move of the gun was a fraction too soon and shot off missing the target.“It happens in the sport, regroup and let’s move on tomorrow. I shot three perfect rounds which is all in the first barrel then one round which is the round I missed out on. I’m confident about tomorrow,” he said.

He said this was not the first time he had lost out on the gold medal playoff in the double barrel.

He did not win the double barrel in 2007 also in Samoa.

“Mixed results from every game except for New Caledonia when I won all six gold but that was exceptional. I’m still confident about the other two events.”
