Work begins on dump site

- By SERAFINA SILAITOGA

TAVEUNI residents can now breathe a sigh of relief as works have started on a rubbish dump area.

Commissioner Northern Jovesa Vocea said a government team had started working on the new site.

However, he said they had yet to complete all necessary processes before works were finalised.

Mr Vocea said residents were using an area near Naqara to dump rubbish.

His comment follows concerns and queries raised by residents about the improper methods used to dump rubbish on the island.

Taveuni residents, villagers and hoteliers have had to find their own rubbish dump sites on the island. A few years ago, concerns were raised about villagers dumping rubbish in the sea.

Taveuni advisory councillor Ravindra Kumar said this was an issue that needed to be rectified immediately.

He said the islanders were faced with other challenging issues that also needed immediate attention.

As a result of the absence of proper rubbish dump site on the island, a few residents started the Keep Taveuni Clean campaign two years ago aimed at creating a clean and healthy environment.
