Layout poses pedestrian risk, claims Khan
PEDESTRIANS attempting to cross main street in Nadi are being placed at risk because of the one-way traffic management system that is in place, claims the Nadi Taxi Association.
Newly-elected president Aslam Khan claimed pedestrians have had near misses because of speeding through the main street during off-peak traffic hours.
“This is a serious concern,” he said. And the only solution, in my view, is for main street to revert to two-way like it was before.
“That way drivers will not be able to race with each other and this will make it safer for pedestrians to cross the street.
Mr Khan added that the road to Prince Charles Park — Raniga St — should also be reverted to a twoway thoroughfare.
“Right now the traffic in Nadi is in a serious mess, taxidrivers are losing business, shops are losing income, drivers are confused and there is a lot of frustration during peak hour in the morning and afternoon. I hope that all the stakeholders can sit with the Fiji Roads Authority and have an open and honest discussion about this issue because it is affecting everyone. We have to find a solution that eases the traffic and also does not impact on business.”
In response, the FRA said it was currently installing traffic lights and this was aimed at enhancing pedestrian safety and help provide efficient traffic flow.
The FRA said lights were being installed at Raniga St and Market Rd intersection, Market Rd and post office intersection and Market Rd and Queens Rd intersection. The FRA said pedestrian crossings were being installed at ANZ Bank and new FNPF building.
