Call for joint effort
THERE have been calls for a concerted effort to ensure that the agenda of effectiveness is mainstreamed into Sustainable Development Goals action and discussions.
Speaking at the Global Partnership for Effective Development Co-operation (GPEDC) Senior Level Meeting (SLM) in New York this week, Fiji Council of Social Services (FCOSS) executive director Vani Catanasiga told participants that they needed to be focused on how they main- streamed effective- ness into the next 10 years of SDG implementation.
Ms Catanasiga said at the global level, this could mean leveraging the issue on the current review of the High Level Political Forum.
“Ten years — that is all we have — 10 years to realise the SDGs,” she said.
Ms Catanasiga said some attention must also be directed at regional mechanisms particularly in the Pacific where the Forum Compact on Strengthening Development Coordination had been shelved.
“Support for country level action is critical and perhaps the best example from our region is Vanuatu which has an Aid Monitoring Policy and a co-ordinating unit in the prime minister’s office.
“The unit co-ordinates and works with local civil society as part of the policy implementation.”
Ms Catanasiga is part of the Pacific delegation supported by the CSO Partnership for Development Effectiveness (CPDE) participating in the GPEDC SLM.
The Pacific delegation includes PIANGO’s executive director Emeline Siale Ilolahia and technical adviser Emele Duituturaga.
Meanwhile, the current review of the United Nations High Level Political Forum is an opportunity for stakeholders to firmly embed development effectiveness into the SDGs discourse.
