Safety is for all motorcyclists
MOTORCYCLE safety requires the public's awareness and cooperation.
And this has prompted the Freedom Riders to organise a Safety Awareness and bike show/four by four and car show since motorcycles safety continues to be an issue of concern.
Freedom Riders Abdul Rayan says the purpose of the motor show is to change the mindset of motorists to share the road with motorcycles and bicycles.
He said the show was also another way for them to promote safety all round be at motorcycles, vehicles, homes, buildings and the precaution measures members of the public could take should there be an accident, mishap and fire to name a few.
"If bikers can come and raise issues that we need to be seen as other road users because many times motorists think we are just an obstacle on the road and this should not be the case," Mr Rayan said.
"Motorcyclists are out for a ride and sharing the road with other motorists. You may be aware of the risks of riding your bike, but are the drivers around you aware? Assume it's not.
"The sudden population of motorcycles on our roads often catches drivers
by surprise this time. Do your part by being aware that other drivers may not see you.
"Stay out of blind spots and expect the unexpected."
He advised motorists to be considerate and think of bikers too while on the road.
"Drivers must allow a greater following distance behind a motorcycle. Motorcyclists will often slow down by downshifting, or merely getting off the throttle. In either of these situations the brake light does not illuminate. Therefore, it is suggested to allow a following distance of 3 to 4 seconds when following a motorcycle.
The show will be held on August 31st at My Suva Picnic Park from 11am to 3pm.
