Fiji girls run riot

- By TALEBULA KATE in Apia, Samoa

THE Fiji girls spoiled the Papua New Guinea party on the tracks yesterday at the Apia Park stadium at the 2019 Pacific Games in Samoa winning gold in the 4x100m relay.

Outclassed by PNG in the 100m, 200m, 400m and 4x400m relay the quartet of Younis Bese, Elenani Tinai, Makereta Naulu and Heleina Young caused an upset grabbing the gold medal from PNG’s sprint queen Toea Wisil who was aiming to take home five gold medals.

Unfortunately the Fiji sprint queens stopped her dominance outrunning her in the final leg of the relay.

Bese who was part of the 2015 relay team that won gold in PNG was over excited to defend the title as the only survivor from the team to be in Samoa.

“I’m really excited since I’m the only one left from the 2015 team but with Heleina, Elenani and Naulu coming in and stepping up, I’m grateful to have them as teammates,” Bese said.

“Relay is different; it’s not like 100 and 200 when it’s just you and the track.

“Relay is teamwork,” she said. “So we all played our part and needed to do our part so we can just be in front of Toea in the 4x100,” she added.

“This is my second Pacific Games and I didn’t do quite well in the individuals but I need to make up in the 4x100m realy so at least all of us had a medal coming in so we are really grateful that we got gold here.

“You know in relay it’s just Fiji and Papua New Guinea just fighting and battling out.

“We had a target on our back with PNG they slightly change their line-up putting Toea in the anchor so even though she was the anchor we had to do our part in it.
