Media play vital role
In democratic societies:
“THE media is a vital element of democratic societies”.
These were the words of British High Commissioner to Fiji Melanie Hopkins during the third Press Club reception on Tuesday evening at the Royal British Legion headquarters in Suva.
“In the United Kingdom (UK), we are certainly a keen supporter of the media and we do not overestimate as good diplomats the importance of bringing everyone together once in a while,” she said.
Speaking to the many media personnel, Ms Hopkins said in July this year the British government joined Canada in hosting a global conference on media freedom in London.
“Over a hundred countries were represented and that’s with over 60 ministers and 1500 delegates from all regions.
“It was great to see representation from this region including Fiji’s Foreign Minister Inia Seruiratu.”
She added that a number of initiatives were announced at the conference including the global pledge by governments to commit to formal and new coalition to protect media freedom and the long-held cases on attacks on journalists.
“To put it simply, we see media freedom and vibrant media as essential for creating economic prosperity, social development and resilient democracies.”
Ms Hopkins added that the choice of the event to be held at the British Legion reflected the high number of Fijians who were part of the British Army and who were the backbone of the UK and Fiji relationship.
“This building through the history of the British Legion and the history of Fijians joining the British Army is the symbol of so many important stories.
“It is lovely to look around and take a moment to think about all of those personal stories of human endeavour and achievements that make up the Fijian relationship with the British Army.”
