ORGANISERS of the annual Fiji Bitter Wairiki 7s rugby tournament on Taveuni Island are inviting teams from across the country to help them improve lives on the island.

Tournament founder Jone Vuki said the tournament, from November 21-23, would help in the improvement of sports facilities around Wairiki.

“This will be the twelveth year of running the tournament,” Vuki said.

“Since the first tournament in 2007, we have spent more than $80,000 in improving facilities, especially in sports. That include building sanitation blocks, improving health facilities and repairing the Wairiki hall which can be used for events and some religious gathering.

“The annual tournament is mainly to promote rugby talents on Taveuni. We have produced rugby stars such as Semi Radradra and we hope that more could be unearthed during our tournament.”

Vuki said teams travelling from Viti Levu could be accommodated at Wairiki and some villages were on standby to accomodate some teams.

“WE have sent out invitations to some top teams.

“The tournament is open to everyone. The main prizemoney in rugby 7 is $8000 with lucrative prizes also in place.

“We will also have a netball and volleyball tournament alongside rugby.”

Teams wishing to play in the event can contact Vuki on 9221111.
