Automated library

- By LITIA CAVA

STUDENTS of Ratu Sukuna Memorial School in Suva now have better access to library services within their school.

This follows the opening of the school’s automated school library yesterday.

The project, which cost about $80,000, was undertaken through the assistance of the Library Services of Fiji.

School manager Levi Raicola said the automated library was the first to be introduced in any primary and secondary school in Fiji.

He said only tertiary institutions in the country had automated libraries.

Mr Raicola said the library would be of great advantage to students and they could use it to conduct their research and also enhance their knowledge.

He said a number of students between Year 9 to Year 10 were slow readers and the school had introduced programs to assist such students.

Mr Raicola said the Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) program was also effective as students were able to spend some time in school to read.

He also highlighted that the main issue now was that students were being promoted to the next level even though they did not know how to read.

Through the assistance of the Fiji Library Services, the school library now has 10 computers and also a new set of books in its newly automated library. ■ More in next week’s KAILA!
