Data security concern

- By MONIKA SINGH

DATA security will remain a key concern for all users and Vodafone Fiji, says its chief operating officer Ronald Prasad.

Mr Prasad made the statement at the CPA Congress 2019 with the theme “Business as unusual”.

He said 70 per cent of data breaches occurred internally, such as disgruntled employees or just through minor errors.

He revealed there had been a few cases of ransomware and cyber attacks, however, they had been detected and stopped.

He revealed they had carried out a survey with their clients and based on the statistics available online, most of the breaches happened internally.

According to Mr Prasad, these breaches occurred as a result of poor password policy, multiple staff members using one password and system and absence of proper guidelines in cases of employees who had resigned but still had access to their emails and company property such as data.

Mr Prasad said there was a need to focus internally because most of the breaches were related to former staff members.

He said businesses in Fiji were affected by ransomware attacks whereby some of the companies were badly affected.

“We have acquired Datec, which is a ICT based company, and we have developed a product which we can use to carry out network audits,” he said.

Mr Prasad said with the audit system, they would be able to provide the clients with a gap analysis which would show them where they stood in terms of best industry practices.

He said customers were investing in safeguarding their companies from outside threats.
