‘Lawyers play key role’ 23 new practitioners admitted to the Bar

- By VISHAAL KUMAR

LAWYERS play a vital role in the legal system and that is not to be taken lightly, Acting Chief Justice Kamal Kumar told 23 lawyers who were admitted to the Bar at the High Court in Suva yesterday.

During the swearing in ceremony, Justice Kumar said the legal profession which the lawyers were now part of was considered a noble one which required them to always act with integrity and dignity.

“As lawyers, you will be entrusted to solve problems faced by members of our communities in terms of their properties, home, finances, business dealings and family matters,” Justice Kumar said.

“It is your duty as lawyers to get people treated fairly and ensure that they get justice. You will be called upon to make decisions which will affect and change people’s lives.”

He reminded the lawyers that they must not forget the very basic fact that they, after being admitted to the Bar, are officers of the court.

“Obviously, there is a difference between being a lawyer and practising law. Almost anyone has the capacity to become a lawyer but not all can become a successful practitioner.”

He added the lawyers needed to be hardworking, committed and dedicated in all respects.

“Most times it is the lawyers who play a major role in judgments written by judges because it is the lawyers who do the research and make submissions to the court.”
