Four-lane roads to ease traffic

- By LOSALINI VUKI

FIJI Roads Authority (FRA) successfully completed one of their major projects earlier this month. Fiji Roads Authority chief executive officer Jonathan Moore said the four-lane roads along the Nakasi-Nausori corridor was opened for the convenience of the traffic users.

Mr Moore said they only had some minor works to complete such as placing underground cables which would take place in the next few months.

"It will not interfere with the road," he said. "The onus is now on the motorists to obey the road signs and drive within the 50km/hour speed limit.

The 3.7 km of strategic road network from Nakasi to Rewa Bridge from single lane to two lanes in each direction including traffic signals, roundabout, cycle lanes, bus shelters, bus bays, median fences.

He said about 230 people worked on this project and added they have constructed a new roundabout which was not part of the original scope of works.

"The new roundabout will be more efficient and safe for motorists," Mr Moore said.

"The total project costs around about $50m — $60m you have to understand that this covers a lot of utility work and land acquisition as well. Being a major arterial, this is vital for the road users and the economy.

It has been a remarkable effort for the FRA team WAPCOS and Higgins Fiji and Dayals Quarries."
