FRA works with strategic partners to design long-term solutions

BUILDING new roads is not the only way to ease traffic congestion, says the Fiji Roads Authority.

The authority’s CEO, Jonathan Moore, said a long-term plan to complement a growing economy and increasing car ownership was required.

He said they were working with strategic partners to build the foundation for this long-term thinking.

“There is a lot of demand for vehicle ownership and there is an increase in the number of cars that are being brought into the country,” he said.

Mr Moore said solutions would need to include a wide range of initiatives such as better public transport, better land use and development planning, creating opportunities for people to travel outside the peak hour traffic and making it easier to walk and cycle.

“We will need to find the right balance of these initiatives to create a more integrated land use and transport system.”

Meanwhile, the FRA said the smooth flow of traffic in the Suva-Nausori corridor was achieved through the hard work and dedication of FRA workers and contractors Dayals Quarries Ltd and Higgins Fiji.

“The smooth flow of traffic is also due to the use of both the new four lanes and Princes Rd.

“The recently completed major roadworks on Princes Rd is one of the contributing factors as motorists have a serviceable alternative.”
