FRU conducts training courses
THE Fiji Rugby Union organised a Match Commissioner’s (MC) course last week as part of plans to increase rugby officials, especially match commissioners, during local tournaments .
The using of more match commissioners is expected to start from next year.
The initiative is also set to increase tournaments in order to develop players and promote the game.
FRU development manager Koli Sewabu said match commissioners played an important role in a tournament or game by looking after players’ welfare.
“The idea to run a MC course was because in the past years there had been an increase in local tournaments and more teams taking part.
“This includes primary schools and secondary schools competitions.”
Sewabu said the course started with the primary and secondary schools match commissioners with the hope of getting more accredited commissioners into this platform to develop it.
“This will also be a perfect platform for former rugby players and referees to get into, in developing the sports locally.
“This is also a pathway for former rugby players and referees who want to associate themselves in the development of the sport.
“They’ll be involved in some local competitions, so they start applying the concepts of an MC and they’ll get their full accreditation once we observe that they’ve passed all criteria.”
A total of 25 participants attended the course for the primary and secondary schools commissioners which they will take an online prerequisites course which runs for two days.
